Forest Segment
In the Forest Service, work has begun on the new southbound alignment. SR 179 will be a “bifurcated” road through the Forest Service, which means the southbound and northbound lanes will be separated from each other. Work on the new southbound roadway will conclude in late spring, and the two bridges on this road will be built next summer. Motorists will continue using the existing road so there will be no traffic impacts.
Work on the northbound alignment will begin when the southbound alignment is done. Traffic will be switched to the newly constructed alignment while crews work on the northbound segment.
Plant Salvage
Plant Salvage in the Forest Service area of the SR 179 project is almost complete. More than 1,200 plants will be salvaged. The plants that are in the roadway boundaries will have boxes placed around them while they are still in the ground. The boxed plants will not be moved for 45 days to help their root systems get over the shock from the boxing.
Rather than one large nursery area, spot nurseries will be used throughout the SR 179 job. Where possible, larger trees will be moved to their final destination, rather than to a construction nursery. Other plants will be put in those areas with the larger trees to help limit the areas where watering is needed. This plan, known as a “once move” strategy has been recommended by our Contractor based on experience to help ensure tree survivability.
Village of Oak Creek
Work has begun in the Village of Oak Creek. Two-way traffic will continue to flow just as it does today. Two-way traffic is being re-routed to the west side of the road while the east side is constructed, and then traffic will switch to the east side for the construction of the west side. Most of the underground work will be done on the east side. Work also will begin on the roundabouts in the Village of Oak Creek. Half of a roundabout will be completed at a time so traffic flow can be maintained.
