Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.
What to Watch for the Week of August 24, 2009
First Priority: SAFETY
Night Lane Restrictions between Canyon Drive and Morgan Wash
Lane restrictions will continue from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning between Canyon Drive and Morgan Wash for at least another month. These restrictions will last until the work on the walls is complete.
More than 7,700 cubic yards of rock and dirt need to be removed to build the east wall at Canyon, which is currently underway. Because of the amount of rock and dirt that needs to be broken, and hauled away, construction must occur at night for the safety of the traveling public and to keep both lanes of traffic open during the business day.
Utility Relocation Across From Hillside
Utility relocation is progressing across from Hillside and traffic has shifted to the east. This work must be complete before they can begin building the retaining wall there. Business access is not affected.
Chapel Roundabout
Construction of a bus bay for the Sedona Roadrunner is being built on the northeast corner of the Chapel Roundabout. This work does not impact traffic.
Project Success: Phase I of Oak Creek Bridge Shafts Complete
The last two of the 28 shafts for Phase I of the new Oak Creek Bridge construction have been completed. Shafts are the concrete columns that go underground 24 feet (14 feet in the dirt and 10 feet into rock) and support the abutments and deck, which are above ground.
There are seven shafts that will be built during Phase II of the bridge construction, which will begin after the old bridge has been removed and traffic has shifted onto the completed Phase I portion of the new bridge.
Work will begin on the last abutment of Phase I to be built, next to Tlaquepaque, the first week of September.
Most of the work of Phase I (over 80%) is complete. The completed bridge girders (the concrete beams that span between the columns and abutments) have been covered with plastic to protect the epoxy-coated steel rebar from the ultra-violet rays of the sun until the concrete deck is put over the entire Phase I bridge after completion of the last span near Tlaquepaque.
ADOT and Southwest Asphalt Paving appreciate your continued cooperation as these improvements are made to SR 179.
Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment and personnel availability. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
