What to Watch for the Week of September 14, 2009

First Priority: SAFETY

Heavy Rains Caused Flash Flooding in Sedona
The community came together to help businesses Thursday afternoon as run-off from heavy rains in West Sedona caused flooding in Soldier’s Wash, which joins Oak Creek downstream from the bridge. Rain along SR 179 also caused some minor flooding in the construction zone, but work continues. Construction crews quit working during the heavy rains about 2 p.m. to help get cars and people to safety during this flash flood. We want to thank them, and Sedona Police and Fire, for their quick response.

Work on the Oak Creek Bridge continued as soon as Friday morning. At the bridge, Oak Creek rose slightly during the storm but did not impact the construction of the new bridge.  The roads are clear and open to the traveling public.

Daytime Work Between Canyon Drive and Morgan Wash
There will be no lane restrictions this week as crews work to excavate material for the uphill and downhill walls between Canyon Drive and Morgan Wash. The work will be from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday this week. There will not be night work in this area this week.

Retaining Wall Across from Hillside Begins
On Monday, crews will begin excavation for the wall across from Hillside. No traffic impacts are expected.

Oak Creek Bridge Activities
The abutment 2 wall support for the west end of the bridge is being constructed. Once it’s complete, crews will be able to set the remaining girders to complete the new portion of the bridge.

ADOT and Southwest Asphalt Paving appreciate your continued cooperation as these improvements are made to SR 179.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment and personnel availability. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.

For a complete listing of freeway and highway restrictions across Arizona visit ADOT's Travel Information Site at www.az511.com or call 5-1-1.
