What to Watch for the Week of November 2, 2009

First Priority: SAFETY

Wall Work between Morgan Wash and Canyon Drive
Construction of the soil nail (see Project Success below) wall near Canyon Drive is underway, and night work may occur this week to excavate additional rock. Work will continue on both the uphill and downhill walls in this area.

Bridge Work
The second bridge deck pour on Oak Creek Bridge is anticipated the week of November 9.

Median Curb and Gutter
The median curb and gutter north of Chapel, and in the Oak Creek Cliffs to Juniper Trail area, will be completed this month.

Storm Drain Near Morgan Wash
Traffic has been shifted to the West as work continues on the installation of the storm drain between Morgan Road and Morgan Wash.

Project Success: Start of the Soil Nail Wall Near Canyon Road
A soil nail wall is an innovative system to reinforce a natural slope by literally nailing the sandstone rock slabs together with a long steel rod (the nail) so they hold tighter, and allow for a more stable slope. The material on the north end of the Morgan Wash to Canyon Road section is ideal for this type of application. By using this system, we can excavate a steeper slope and keep the new road width to a minimum. The wall will be built in sections so the slope is stabilized before going deeper towards the southern section.

ADOT and Southwest Asphalt Paving appreciate your continued cooperation as these improvements are made to SR 179.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment and personnel availability. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
