Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.
What to Watch for Week of March 10
Special Note:
Work is scheduled to begin approximately March 31 in the Project 2 Business District between Ranger and the Y. Project Team members will visit these businesses during the weeks of March 10 and 24. Two-way traffic and business access will be maintained.
Project 1
Median Work
Roadway Work South of Village
Removal of Temporary Pavement
Planting of Salvaged Trees
Project 2
Work in Oak Creek
Work at Post Office
New Box Culvert Near Juniper
New Retaining Wall North of Poco Diablo
Project 1
Median Work
For nearly the entire length of Project 1, traffic is traveling on both sides of the median and crews are working on the median curb. The work should not impact traffic, except briefly when equipment needs to move in and out of the construction zone.
Roadway Work South of the Village
Crews are working to complete the roadway south of the Village. Watch carefully for traffic control devices to guide you through the area as progress is rapid and the devices and markings may change from day to day.
Removal of Temporary Pavement
Crews are working on the east side of SR 179 near the Oak Creek Country Club Golf Course in the Village of Oak Creek to remove temporary pavement. The photo shows the detour that was placed early in Project 1 to create a work zone on the opposite side of SR 179 for construction of the retaining wall at that location. This temporary pavement is called a “shoo-fly” in the construction industry. This is an old railroad term, and figuratively refers to “shoo-ing” traffic around a construction area.
Planting of Salvaged Trees
In preparation for the opening of the new southbound alignment in Coconino National Forest, trees that were salvaged and boxed at the beginning of the project are going to be replanted this week. Two way traffic is anticipated to be switched to the new alignment in late March.
Project 2
Work in Oak Creek
There will be work occurring on the new pedestrian and roadway bridges at Oak Creek. A temporary bridge is in place for construction workers and equipment, as shown in the photo.
Work at Post Office
Work is continuing on the new driveway at the post office. ADOT currently is working on outreach materials to inform the community about the new post office circulation pattern that will be in place in late March.
New Box Culvert Near Juniper
As seen on the photo, crews are working in the area of Juniper to extend a box culvert underground that conveys storm water flows under the roadway. Also in this area, the crews have already laid 230 feet of storm drain. There will be multiple box culvert extensions throughout the project to convey stormwater under the road. The culverts need to be widened to pass under the new roadway, medians, shoulders, curb and gutter, and sidewalks.
New Retaining Wall North of Poco Diablo
Construction has begun on a retaining wall that will be located just north of Poco Diablo on the west side of SR 179. The photo shows grading activities to prepare for construction of the wall. A retaining wall is built “below the ground” so it will not be seen from the roadway. It is designed to basically “hold the road up” and is in place to narrow the roadway footprint, which would need to be wider if the stability structure was not built.
Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
