Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.

SR179 Construction

Progress is being made!

There has been significant progress on the construction of SR 179, and a lot of it is not necessarily visible to the public’s eye. Underground work is being completed and surface work has started, such as curb and gutter, sidewalk, and preparing the roadway for paving.

  • Plant salvage in the Forest Service is complete except for the final phase along the existing alignment, which will be completed once construction begins on that portion.
  • Work continues to progress on the new southbound alignment through the Forest Service. Grading of the new alignment is almost complete between the Village and Bell Rock and between the two new bridges. The bridge construction should be complete in June.
  • A major part of road construction is improving the storm drain system. The storm drain system on Jack’s Canyon Road is complete, and other storm drain systems in Project 1 that are nearing completion include the trunk line on SR 179 between Jack’s Canyon and Tequa, the trunk line on SR 179 between Jack’s Canyon and Oak Creek Country Club, all pipe culverts on the new southbound alignment and the storm drain system at Back O’ Beyond.
  • Box culverts, which channel flowing water under SR 179, are complete at Back O’ Beyond, on the new southbound alignment on Templeton Trail, and three box culverts south of Tequa Plaza also are finished.
  • The retaining walls are complete north of the new Ranger Station (except backfilling on one side) and at Kokopelli Inn (except for staining).

What to watch for the week of April 9:

Ongoing Work

Storm drain work throughout Project 1 is ongoing. Business access will be maintained, although intermittent driveway closures are necessary. The closures are minimized and expedited to the extent possible. Temporary concrete barrier is installed to help traffic flow, and blue business access signs are installed to guide traffic through the construction zone. There may be minor traffic impacts such as shoulder closures or construction vehicles needing access to the road, or lane closures with flaggers/DPS present.

Cortez Road is anticipated to open by late April.  Please follow the detour signs and obey speed limits through the neighborhoods.

Work for new bridge construction in the forest segment is ongoing near milepost 309.5, and there may be short duration flagging operations. The HT Trail will be closed through Spring 2007.

Project 2 Utility Work

Back O’ Beyond to Copper Cliffs (APS, Qwest and Cable Vision)
APS trenching crews are working between Back O’ Beyond and Highland Road. Work will be concentrated between Back O’ Beyond and Chapel Road, and between Sombart Lane and Highland Roads. The overhead power crews are working between Morgan Road and Copper Cliffs Drive. Their crews will continue to work in the corridor until approximately the end of April 2007. The public can expect to see APS, Qwest and Cable Vision crews and their contractor adjacent to the roadway in this area.

Bowstring (City of Sedona)
Starting the week of April 16th the City of Sedona will be installing two new sewer service connections just north of Bowstring on the west side of the road. This work is expected to be completed by May 21st.

Canyon to the Y ( Arizona Water)
Arizona Water Company is working near the Y and will continue working their way south installing the new 16 inch water line. The new water line installation is scheduled to be completed by mid-July.
