Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.

What to Watch for Week of April 27

Business District Complete

The "business district”, which for purposes of this construction project is defined as the area between Canyon and the Y (including Brewer), is functional and the stunning new wall in front of Hillside is complete.  All business driveways are easily accessible, with little or no barricades in the area.  Work will continue on the bridge, the retaining wall across from Hillside (no effect on Hillside access) and the landscaping throughout the summer.

Oak Creek Bridge

The concrete bridge spans (box girders) will be delivered beginning Monday, April 27, through Thursday, April 30. Each concrete girder is between 58 and 66 feet long. Eight to 12 over-sized trucks, each carrying one girder, will arrive in Sedona each morning, Monday-Thursday, around 6 a.m. from Phoenix, via I-17, to SR 260, to SR 89A, and finally to SR 179. These box girders must be placed before the final bridge deck can be placed.

The trucks park temporarily on SR 89A in a staging area just south of Brewer Road, as they wait for the girders to be put into place one at a time. Traffic will be shifted on SR 89A as it approaches the Brewer roundabout while still keeping two lanes of traffic on SR 89A open in both directions except when girders are moved from staging area.

During the placement of the girders on the bridge, two-way traffic on the bridge will be maintained. Flaggers will be present to let the trucks carrying the girders in and out and to maintain traffic flow on SR 179. The area will be congested so please allow for extra time to pass through SR 179.

Night Work and Lane Closures

Night work is ongoing from Morgan Wash to Canyon Drive from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday – Thursday nights to place a 16-inch water line. Traffic will be reduced to one lane and flaggers will be present. This work includes a rock saw, which creates a lot of noise. The work is being done at night to mitigate daytime traffic issues.  ADOT and the contractor apologize in advance to the residents in the area and will do everything they can to minimize the duration of this nighttime activity.

Paving near Hillside

Crews are prepping for paving near the Hillside retaining wall.  Paving is scheduled from Back O’ Beyond to Oak Creek Cliffs on Thursday and Friday. Crews will also be working on manholes from the Inn on Oak Creek Bed and Breakfast to just north of Hozho’s.  Please use caution in this area. Two-lane traffic will be maintained.

Sidewalks Take Shape

Concrete crews have completed the last sidewalk from Back O’ Beyond to Meadowlark Drive.  Crews continue to head north, pouring concrete for sidewalks on the east side of SR 179.

Bicycle Event on SR 179

The Mingus Mountain Madness bicycle tour will take place on Sunday, May 3 beginning at 7 a.m.  The roundtrip tour is from Verde Valley School to Prescott Valley.  The route will start in the Village of Oak Creek and use SR 179 to Beaverhead Flat Road south of the Village.  Please use caution on this area of SR 179 and watch for bikes.  In preparation for the event, the completed bike lanes in the Village and Forest Service Sections of SR 179 (Project 1) will be swept on May 1.  Please watch out for the street sweeper and use caution when passing it.

City of Sedona Work in Broken Arrow Subdivision

The City of Sedona will continue paving in the Broken Arrow subdivision.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
