Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.
What to Watch for Week of May 25
No Construction Memorial Day Weekend
All construction activities will stop at Noon on Friday, May 22 and resume at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, May 26. Construction areas will be clearly marked and easily passable, but traffic will be heavy, so please allow extra time when travelling SR 179 this weekend. Have a fun and safe holiday.
Night Work at Oak Creek Bridge
Beginning Tuesday, May 26, crews will start the demolition of a small portion of the southern section of the existing bridge near Tlaquepaque. This work will occur 24-hours per day for three days. Two lanes of traffic on the bridge will shift to the north side of the bridge Tuesday morning. The bridge will remain open with two lanes of traffic, one in each direction, throughout construction. Access to Tlaquepaque, the Center for the New Age, and the shops in the Garlands building will all remain open and are easily accessible by following the blue business access signs during the next phases of the new bridge construction.

Looking east towards the small portion of the existing bridge to be removed.
Pedestrian Safety in Construction Zone
When walking along SR 89A and SR 179 through the construction zone, please stay on designated sidewalks. Pedestrians should refrain from walking through certain areas of the construction zone on or near unfinished sidewalks or retaining walls. Please utilize the public transportation that is available along the corridor as much as possible.
It is important to note that pedestrians should NOT cross through the center circle of roundabouts. All pedestrian crossings should be at the designated cross walks near the entrances and exits to the roundabout (look for signs and pavement markings to guide you).
Weekend Travel
Drivers heading out on state highways over the Memorial Day weekend will not have to worry about construction closures. The Arizona Department of Transportation says no construction closures are scheduled on Arizona highways, including Phoenix area freeways, during the three-day weekend.
ADOT urges drivers to be prepared in the event of any unscheduled highway restrictions over the holiday weekend. Drivers are asked to follow these safety tips before and during any road trips this summer:
- Buckle Up
- Be Patient and Don't Speed
- Never Drink and Drive
- Check Your Vehicle, Including Tire Pressure
- Get Some Rest Before Your Trip
- Check Highway Conditions at www.az511.gov
ADOT has joined with the State Department of Public Safety and Governor's Office of Highway Safety in asking drivers to focus on safe driving over the holiday weekend and throughout the summer driving season. During last year's Memorial Day weekend, 17 people were killed in crashes on highways and local roads across the state.
Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
For a complete listing of freeway and highway restrictions across Arizona visit ADOT's Travel Information Site at www.az511.com or call 5-1-1.
