Project 2 - Sedona City Limits

Brewer Roundabout

SR 89A was recently narrowed to one lane in each direction approaching the Y intersection from West Sedona for intense work on the Brewer Roundabout. The area of Brewer Road and the Sedona Post Office is anticipated to be complete by the end of June. At that time, the additional northbound lane will be reopened, except for the short length between Brewer and the Y, and work will begin on the Y intersection.

Night Work on Underground SR 179 Utility Crossings

Construction crews will be working nights for the next two weeks to place "laterals" (utility trenches that cross SR 179) for electric wires and storm drain. The crews will work at Schnebly Hill Road, Arrow Drive, and Chapel Drive during that two week period. The work is being conducted at night to minimize traffic impacts and expedite the work.

Retaining Walls

Work continues on the more than 20 retaining walls that are being built throughout the corridor to hold the road in place as it winds through the community. This week there will be five walls underway in the vicinity of SR 179 and Portal/Ranger, and those are expected to be complete around the end of July or early August. Walls throughout the project will have patterns and be stained a rustic brown color. The patterns and color were selected by the Sedona City Council and also discussed by the community Design Advisory Panel (DAP) that worked with ADOT in late 2004 on the design details for this area.

Excavation Back O-Beyond to Chapel Road

Work has begun on a major hillside excavation  on the west side of the road between Back O' Beyond and Chapel Road. Once the area is cleared and graded, it will be paved and traffic will be shifted to that new pavement. This should take place over the next six weeks.

Changes Afoot at Mallard (Mystic Hills)

There has been a great deal of work over the past few months in the area of Mallard Drive and the entrance to the Mystic Hills area. The large box culvert that is being built underground at that location also will act as a pedestrian underpass when complete, as the sidewalk will shift at that location from the east side of SR 179 to the west side. Starting at Canyon, the sidewalk will be placed on both sides of the road up to the Y.

Project 1 - Village of Oak Creek and Coconino National Forest

Completion South of Village

It is anticipated that work will wrap up south of the Village this week. Permanent signage placement is upcoming.

Paving and Tree Salvage in Forest

Tree salvage has begun on the new northbound alignment, which is also being paved.  The new alignment is expected to be open late this summer.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
