What to Watch for Week of June 23

CITY HOSTS MEETING ON JULY 2
No Construction Chat on July 3

The City of Sedona and ADOT will host a public meeting on July 2 at the Sedona Public Library from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to detail the traffic plans during construction at the “Y”, which will start after the 4th of July weekend.

Consequently, Construction Chat will not be held the next morning, July 3. The next Construction Chat will be on August 7.

ADOT and the City of Sedona will outline the phasing plan for construction of the roundabout at the Y, which will be one of the more complex elements of this construction project.  The sequencing plan is being designed to take as little time as possible at the Y. This construction will entail traffic impacts and will require community cooperation and patience. This must be done so traffic can continue to move in all directions and ultimately, provide less inconvenience.

ADOT will launch an intensive communication campaign including publications with user-friendly graphics, media outreach, and personal visits with businesses to describe the plan and prepare the community for this phase of work.

The contractor will work 20 hour days, 7 days a week, to complete the Y intersection and cutting the scheduled timeline in half. Otherwise, this construction would take four months and would go into the busy tourist time for Sedona.

ADOT on KAZM

Tune in to KAZM AM 780 at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, to hear the latest on the SR 179 construction. The show will be repeated at 12:15 p.m.

Project 2

Brewer Roundabout - Traffic to be on New Pavement Mid-Week

The south half of the Brewer roundabout is being completed. Two-way traffic will flow on new pavement near Burger King and Coldwell Banker. This traffic shift currently is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, June 24.

Two-way traffic will switch this week to
flow on new pavement near Burger King and
Coldwell Banker.

Traffic traveling from West Sedona toward Uptown will be able to turn right onto Brewer Road, and right turns also will be allowed from Brewer Rd toward Uptown.

The Post Office side of the roundabout will be completed next, followed by the Y.

Special Note on 89A Traffic: Use Two Lanes Up to Merge Point for Better Traffic Flow

Traffic will flow better from West Sedona if both lanes are used all the way up to the merge point (rather than just backing up in one lane). Then vehicles should alternate one at a time from each lane into the one-lane section.

Gas Line Installation Y to Ranger

The storm drain work in the middle of the road in front of Tlaquepaque has been completed. Work is also complete on the west side of SR 179 between the Y and Ranger.  Gas line installation continues on the east side of 179 and is anticipated to be complete in mid-July.

Sidewalk and Curb/Gutter - Mallard to Oak Creek

Two-way traffic continues to flow within City limits south of the business district (south of Canyon) where work on retaining walls, underground box culverts, and utilities is ongoing.  Traffic is shifted along this stretch to allow for work on the opposite side of the road.  The community will notice installation of sidewalk and curb/gutter, which makes the roadway begin to visually take shape.

Night Work Continues for Utility Crossings

Night work will continue for utility work. Construction begins at 9 p.m. and continues until 5 a.m., all construction work will be finished and off the road by 6 a.m. Construction crews are working to place "laterals" (utility trenches that cross SR 179) for electric wires and storm drain. The crews are working between Garlands and Exposures and also at  Arrow Drive and Ranger Road. The work is being conducted at night to minimize traffic impacts and expedite the work.

Project 1

Bike Lanes Complete in Village

The bike lanes in the Village have been striped and the signs will be installed this week. Please note that in roundabout intersections bicycles have the option of acting as pedestrians (by walking their bikes across the crosswalks) or as vehicles.  Bicycles should be given a full lane width to negotiate the roundabout, and be yielded to in the circle like any vehicle.  The speed in a roundabout is slow enough (20 mph) that a bicycle will not slow down the roadway operation, and the bicycles have the right to share the road.

HT Trail Opens

The HT Trail will open by the end of the month to hikers and mountain bikes (it is a non-motorized trail). It connects the Bell Rock Pathway to the Templeton/Cathedral Rock trail.

July 4 Holiday Weekend Construction Schedule

Construction that impacts traffic will not take place from Noon on Thursday, July 3, to 6 a.m. on Monday, July 7. Work may be on-going on shoulders, on the bridge, etc., to meet construction schedules

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
