Welcome to the State Route (SR) 179 Project Weekly Construction Update - your electronic connection to the SR 179 Project with the most current information on construction plans and activities.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.

For a complete listing of freeway and highway restrictions across Arizona visit ADOT's Travel Information Site at www.az511.com or call 5-1-1.

What to watch for the week of June 25:
SR179 Construction
Construction crews will be working Monday, June 25 through Saturday, June 30. Construction crews will end work for the 4th of July holiday weekend at noon on July 3 and resume work on July 9.

Bell Rock Boulevard, to the east of its intersection with SR 179, has been closed for storm pipe work. It will be re-opened July 4-8 and closed again July 9. Temporary message boards and signage are in place to assist motorists with a detour to Navajo.

Bell Rock Bridge

Jack's Canyon Road will remain closed this week for storm drain work. It will be re-opened on July 3. It will close again for paving later in July. More details will be given as they become available.

Indian Cliffs Road remains closed. Work should be completed so it can be re-opened by mid-July.

The daily restrictions on Verde Valley School Road have ended. If restrictions are necessary for future work in the intersection, advance notice will be given.

The setting of the bridge girders on the two new bridges in the Forest Service should be completed                                         this week. This is a major milestone in the bridge                                         construction.

SR 179 Communications

ADOT hosts Construction Chat on the first Thursday of each month from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the SR 179 Project Office in Bell Rock Plaza. The next Construction Chat will be Thursday, July 5.

Tune in to KAZM AM 780 at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, to hear the latest on the SR 179 construction. The show will be repeated at 12:15 p.m.

Ongoing Work on SR 179

Storm drain work throughout Project 1 is ongoing. Temporary concrete barrier is installed throughout the Village to help traffic flow, and blue business access signs are installed to guide traffic through the construction zone. There may be minor traffic impacts such as shoulder closures or construction vehicles needing access to the road, or lane closures with flaggers/DPS present.

Ht-Trail-Bridge

Work for new bridge construction in the forest segment is ongoing near milepost 309.5, and there may be short duration flagging operations.

The HT Trail closure will be extended to mid-summer. Information will be provided as it becomes available.

Project 2 Utility Work

Evening Lane Closures Continue
Arizona Water Company's Contractor (Tiffany Construction) will be working Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Highland Road and 89A requiring a lane shift. Traffic will be maintained in both directions and directed by flag crews at all times.

APS Trenching
APS trenching crews will be working daytime hours along the east shoulder of Schnebly Hill Road just north of the SR 179 intersection. Traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times with flag crews as needed.

Juniper to Morgan
UniSource's contractor is continuing to trench from Morgan Road toward Painted Canyon to install the new 6" gas line.

NPG Cable
NPG Cable is expected to start pulling overhead cable to the north from Morgan Road sometime in the next few weeks at Morgan Road. There is no firm schedule yet and more information will be released when it is
available.

When complete, SR 179 will have:

  • One travel lane in each direction.
  • 8-foot shoulders that will allow emergency vehicle access and accommodate bicycles.
  • Sidewalks and walking paths for a walkable corridor all the way from the Village to the "Y".
  • Curb and gutter throughout.
  • One ¾-mile passing lane in each direction through the Coconino National Forest, just north of the Village (northbound between MP 307 and 308; southbound between MP 308 and 309)
  • Improvements to the Bell Rock Vista scenic pullout and Little Horse trailhead, and the addition of two brand new scenic pullouts with parking (one northbound MP at 308.3 and one southbound MP at 308.5)
  • Multiple dedicated turn lanes.
  • Raised medians.
  • Roundabout intersections where traffic data warrant intersection control.
