Community Celebration Saturday, July 26

ADOT is hosting a Community Celebration on Saturday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to Noon at the new Red Rock Scenic Vista for the opening of the new State Route 179 (SR 179) northbound alignment through the Coconino National Forest.

The community is invited to walk, bike, and skate on the new road before it is open to cars. The public can view construction and emergency equipment up close, meet with ADOT and contractor team members, review bike safety, and learn more about roundabouts. KAZM radio will also be on site doing a live remote. The Verde Valley Model A car club will have cars there for viewing, too.

Sedona Photo Express and A Day in the West is sponsoring a photo contest. Photos must be taken during the event on Saturday from the new alignment. The winner will have their photo used in the 2010 Bradshaw Calendar. For more information, please call (928) 282-6606.

Parking and shuttle service starts at 8:45 a.m. from stops on SR 179 including Bell Rock Plaza and Bradshaw Gallery in the Village and United Methodist Church at Back-O-Beyond. Free shuttle services will be provided by Sedona Roadrunner and Day in the West jeeps. Parking also will be allowed on the northbound alignment, including handicapped parking. ADOT personnel and signage will guide participants to the parking areas.

Bike & Bean in the Village of Oak Creek will be organizing a road ride for all levels of riders. They will also be hosting a barbecue with live music. In partnership with the Sedona Sunrise Center for Adults, the Sedona United Methodist Church will provide snacks and bottled water. Free-will offerings will be accepted.
Southwest Asphalt Paving, Blue Moon Café and Village Business Association will be providing bottled water and energy drinks at Red Rock Scenic Vista.

“The entire community is invited to this family friendly event,” said Carl Burkhalter, PE, SR 179 Project Manager. “This will be a great opportunity to experience the new alignment before its open.”

The new northbound alignment will open to traffic in early August after the final layer of rubberized asphalt is applied.

Please note: Changes to construction plans can happen frequently due to weather, equipment availability and personnel issues. We try to anticipate construction activities a week in advance but changes may occur. Intermittent lane closures, with short delays, may not always be known in advance.
